At the Global 5G-A Commercial Pilot Program launch conference held in Shanghai, Wang Tao, Huawei’s Executive Director and Chairman of the ICT Infrastructure Business Management Committee, talked about three key changes regarding the integration of 5G-A and Artificial Intelligence.
Tao shared his predictions on how the combination of 5G-A and Artificial Intelligence will shape the smartphone market in the future.
The Future of Technology: Safer and Disconnected Artificial Intelligence
Wang Tao stated that artificial intelligence-supported smartphones will account for 11% of this year’s shipments, and this rate could reach 90% by 2030. From Tao’s speech, it appears that Large Language Models (LLM) and major AI features will become standard for smartphones in the next few years.
“We will soon see a massive increase in traffic originating from AI. At the same time, 5G-A networks will be able to deliver higher speeds, lower latencies, and greater capacity to meet the network demands of the AI era,” Tao said.
Currently, flagship smartphones from many Chinese and foreign manufacturers, such as Huawei, OPPO, Samsung, Google and Apple, have integrated relatively lightweight Big Language Models that can perform certain tasks on the device.
This approach makes advanced features more secure and offers advantages such as not requiring an internet connection. For more advanced features, the phone communicates with larger LLMs running on cloud servers.
As LLMs become more efficient and chips become more capable, companies will be able to run more features on the device, which will be both more attractive to users and benefit manufacturers by reducing the operating costs of cloud servers.
Apple, in particular, was the latest company to enter the artificial intelligence smartphones market. The company’s latest iOS release, iOS 18, comes with “Apple Intelligence” that adds new and exciting capabilities to system apps and voice assistant Siri.
