5nm is coming, but 7nm will be more efficient
As we mentioned above, Huawei is China’s largest semiconductor firm for future Kirin chipset releases. SMIC’s have to trust. Today, SMIC has made significant progress by successfully falling into the 5nm process. This advancement is expected to be used in the Kirin 9100, which will be available in the Mate 70 series. However, it seems that Huawei will not only focus on new production processes.
Zhang Pingan, Huawei’s Executive Director, in a recent speech Transition to 5nm or 3nm process is not the primary goal he emphasized. Instead, Pingan touched on the 7nm process, where efficiency and production problems currently persist. In short, the company’s focus will not be on advancing the production process, but on improving the overall capabilities of the chipset.
Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that the company focuses on the 7nm fabrication process, as in the Kirin 9000S and Kirin 9010. It was also previously stated that Kirin 9000S will enter budget phones and has the potential to disrupt the competitive dynamic in the market. However, production problems may cause these plans to be delayed.
