Huawei was one of the first brands that came to mind when it came to headphones. Especially under the FreeBuds Series, there are many options at different price points and appealing to different budgets. Moreover, as time goes by, we see that these models are becoming more developed and their price-performance ratio is increasing. FreeBuds 6i, which has been on sale in Turkey for a few weeks, is a good example of this. This headset is sold in the Huawei Online Store with a price tag of 2,999 TL; It offers features such as active noise canceling, lightweight and ergonomic design, and long battery life at a relatively affordable price. The Huawei FreeBuds 6i review article and video includes impressions and comments about this wireless headset model.
Huawei FreeBuds 6i
Huawei FreeBuds 6i is very similar to its predecessor 5i, with both headphone and charging box designs. At first glance, you might think there are no differences, but when you dig into the details, it becomes clear that there are notable differences. First of all, this headset is made of plastic, like its predecessor. It looks really nice with its glossy surface. The black color that Huawei sent us for review is really cool, it will be a good choice especially for those who like the weight of the black color and want to use the headset with more formal business attire. White and purple colors seem to appeal to younger people, especially the purple color has a slightly unusual atmosphere.
FreeBuds 6i takes up a little more volume than its predecessor in terms of the headphone section, but the body part is a little shorter. However, it is easily attached and fits comfortably in the ear. It has a closed-ended design and silicone tips of different sizes come out of the box. You can determine which tip will give you the best comfort and sound by applying the ear fit test in the companion AI Life application that manages the headset. As always, the tips that came out of the box and attached to the headphones offered the ideal comfort and sound for me, and I passed the test successfully.
The 6i is also light like its predecessor, the 5i, and does not feel heavy on the ears. Even if you use it for a long time, you do not feel tired and you do not need to take it off much. Even with sudden movements, the headphones do not jump out or move, providing a solid and reliable use. This also makes the headphones useful for sports activities. Moreover, the headset is resistant to intense sweat or liquid splashes, thanks to its IP54 certified sweat and water resistance feature. You can do your exercises in the rain with peace of mind while wearing these headphones.
Although the body part I mentioned is slightly shorter than the one in the 5i, it provides enough space for touch controls. There are possibilities such as pausing or replaying the playing content by clicking once, skipping to the previous or next content by clicking twice, and switching between active noise canceling and permeability mode by pressing and holding. If you are using it on a phone, you can answer or reject the incoming call by simply clicking on the body part. You can manage these controls through the AI Life application. By the way, it is also possible to adjust the volume by dragging your finger up and down on the body.
Although the charging box design has not changed, Huawei has abandoned the dotted, slightly egg-like pattern it used in the previous model and has opted for a matte surface. It also has an oval, transverse and wide body design. You can easily open and close the cover with a single finger move without any effort. There is no problem in taking the headphones out of their sockets and putting them back. There is the Huawei logo just below the cover, and under it is the LED status lamp. There is a USB-C port at the bottom. It is charged via this port, wireless charging is not available. On the right edge, there is a large and easily pressed pairing button.
Huawei FreeBuds 6i is a Bluetooth 5.3 supported headset. You can quickly pair it with devices such as a smartphone, tablet or computer. Then, the connection is established as soon as you take the headphones out of the box and put them in your ears. The ability to establish an active connection with two devices at the same time is among the features of the 6i that you will love. In this way, you can establish an active connection with your smartphone and your tablet or computer, for example, when you receive a call on your phone while watching something on the tablet, you can make a phone call using the headphones. From the connection section in the AI Life application, you can see the paired devices, select the two devices with which the active connection will be provided, and make changes between different devices.
Speaking of AI Life, let’s say that this Huawei application offers comprehensive support for FreeBuds 6i, including some of the functions we mentioned in the previous section. You can find this application in the App Store for iPhones and in the AppGallery for Huawei phones. If you are using an Android phone, you can go to the web version of AppGallery by searching for AI Life on Google, download the APK file from there and install it on your phone. I usually used Huawei FreeBuds 6i with Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6. I also installed the AI Life application using the method I mentioned last. AI Life; In addition to the controls I mentioned before, it also offers opportunities such as active noise canceling control, switching between sound profiles, and software updates. It allows you to easily manage FreeBuds 6i with its clear and simple interface. It also shows the battery levels of both the headphones and the charging box first.
By the way, pairing Huawei FreeBuds 6i with Huawei branded smartphones, laptops or tablets is a little faster. When you bring the charging box next to the device you will connect and open the cover, a window appears on the device screen and after you click on the “Connect” option, the connection is established within seconds. Since FreeBuds 6i is a “Super Device”, you can also see this headset in the “Super Devices” section in the Control Panel on Huawei branded devices and quickly switch the sound.
I mentioned that the knob section of the FreeBuds 6i is slightly larger. Huawei has placed an 11mm quad-magnet dynamic driver here instead of the 10mm driver in the 5i. Thus, the aim is to further increase the bass, treble and mid frequencies. The sound output intensity of the headphones is quite high, I can easily say that they are satisfactory in this respect. Treble and mid frequencies are felt a little stronger than the bass. You can change the structure of the sound output with various profiles under the “Sound effects” section in AI Life. While “strong bass” increases the bass even slightly, you have to pay a little attention to the music to feel the effect. The effect of profiles that boost high and mid frequencies respectively, such as “Boost the treble” or “Human voices”, is a little easier to understand. The “Symphony” and “Hi-Fi Live” effect is not as obvious.
Huawei FreeBuds 6i also supports high-quality audio codecs such as LDAC, which we usually see in high-end Android phones. Galaxy Z Flip 6, with which I tested these headphones, supports LDAC, so it was possible to feel the difference of the codec in question. After selecting the “Prioritize sound quality” option from the “Sound quality” section in AI Life, it is necessary to find FreeBuds 6i in the Bluetooth settings on the phone and turn on LDAC in its settings. Indeed, both the loudness and clarity of the sound are slightly increased.
When I first started to experience the FreeBuds 6i, its performance, especially in the bass, was not at a level that would satisfy a person like me who listens to bass-intensive music. However, I can say that this situation changed with the subsequent update. The bass is more intense and perceptible than before. However, the dominance of trebles and mid-frequencies makes it possible to achieve a satisfactory performance in pop music tracks or podcasts. For example, the bass and treble balance is very good in tracks such as “Depeche Mode – Break The Silence” or “MC Hammer – Can’t Touch This”, which are popular pop music songs of the 90s. As a result, I can say that these headphones offer a useful and satisfactory sound performance, especially for pop music tracks and podcasts.
When we compare the 6i with its predecessor, the 5i, we see that the microphone and speaker arrangement has changed and more elements are included. This also increases the active noise canceling and microphone performance of the headphones. These headphones, which are stated to come with ANC 3.0 technology, demonstrate a noise canceling performance of up to 50 dB. These headphones, which are more successful in blocking low-frequency sounds, do not make the environment quiet when worn and active noise canceling is turned on, as is the case with higher-end headphones. However, it will provide a satisfactory level of noise blocking during plane or train journeys. In this way, you can focus better on the content while listening to music or following podcast broadcasts. I walked from work to home a few times with the FreeBuds 6i in my ears and listened to podcasts while doing so. I found the performance of the noise canceling to be quite good. Perhaps vehicle and especially horn sounds can still be heard, but these do not interfere with or suppress the content you are listening to.
External awareness mode is one of the successful aspects of FreeBuds 6i. When you turn it on, the external sound is noticeably amplified. It even has a stronger sound output than normal. A high level of external awareness when listening to music while exercising outside will be good for your safety. In addition, you can hear your colleagues’ conversations better when working with headphones on in the office.
Microphone performance also seems very successful. With the help of advanced microphone equipment, clear and understandable voice recording is made, with your voice at the forefront, even in windy environments. In the sound recordings I made with the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s own microphone system and the FreeBuds 6i itself, the treble level in the sound recording made with the FreeBuds 6i is lower due to intensive noise cancellation, however, the sound is more understandable and the external environment noise is almost non-existent. .
On the battery side, Huawei FreeBuds 6i performs well. Huawei states that these headphones offer up to 35 hours of battery life. He also adds that it is possible to listen to music for 4 hours with just 10 minutes of charging. The headset offers up to 5 hours of listening time on a single charge with active noise canceling turned on. The practical results seem close to these. FreeBuds 6i gets you through a long gym workout or intercontinental plane ride on a single charge. The charging box also provides 3-4 additional listening power. If you do not use them very intensively, charging the headphones every 5-7 days will be sufficient.
As we mentioned at the beginning, charging is done via the USB-C port on the bottom edge. In addition, the short cable that comes out of the box provides great practicality. There is no wireless charging feature, but this is not a big shortcoming.
Nowadays, the prices of high-end headphones start from 5,000 TL. If you do not want to go to these levels for a headset, but do not want to feel deficient in terms of features, Huawei FreeBuds 6i with a price tag of 2,999 TL can be considered a good opportunity. These headphones are just like top-class products with both their design and charging box. It is also at a level that will challenge them in terms of battery life. Although active noise canceling performance does not reach the level of high-end headphones, it meets expectations when listening to music or podcasts. Voice recording with the microphone is also very successful.
FreeBuds 6i may not meet everyone’s expectations, especially for those who like to listen to music with intense bass. However, the 6i’s performance is impressive, especially in pop music tracks or speech-oriented content. As a result, FreeBuds 6i will meet the expectations of the mainstream user base in many aspects.
