Vehicles that undertake heavy duties such as tractors and trucks are still powered by diesel engines today. Although 100% electric equivalents such as Tesla Semi are available for sale, they are not yet widespread in long-distance use. Unlike these, SuperTruck 2 combines a diesel engine with a 48V mild hybrid system.
The vehicle, which resembles a high-speed train rather than a tow truck with its design, pushes the limits in reducing aerodynamic drag. Aside from the interesting body shape, up to 48 percent reduction in air friction coefficient has been achieved thanks to the cameras used instead of traditional side mirrors and the wheels hidden behind flat panels.
SuperTruck 2 is powered by the PACCAR MX-11 engine, which is combined with a 48V mild hybrid with new generation lithium-ion batteries and produces 440 hp maximum power. The hybrid system allows the tractor to be equipped with electric fans and electric steering, as well as electric coolant and air conditioning pumps. This makes the vehicle more efficient compared to previously operated mechanical systems.
Apart from SuperTruck 2’s efficient engine, its trailer is also surprisingly light. Kenworth stated that the tractor and trailer had a total weight of 11,839 kg. It is stated that this is 3,221 kg lighter than a typical vehicle commonly used today.
To achieve this, 10 concept tires were used, saving 161 kg of weight. In addition, thanks to the efficiency of the engine, the fuel tank has been reduced to around 300 liters without sacrificing range.
Although the vehicle in question has a diesel engine, the company states that the design is compatible with fuel cells, hydrogen tanks, natural gas tanks or batteries.
