When was the last time you repaired a technological device by watching a video on YouTube? If these types of videos make your job easier, the new battery removal and installation video published by iFixit will be very useful. An extremely thin iPad is the guest of the video: 13 inch M4 iPad Pro. The new 13-inch M4 iPad Pro is really thin. This makes repairing some parts of the device even more difficult, as confirmed by iFixit in a teardown video published this weekend. However, Apple has made seriously useful changes when it comes to battery replacement.
For the first time on an iPad Pro model, we can remove the battery immediately after removing the screen. Teardown Tech’s Shahram Mokhtari notes in a blog post that “first time” is relative. Because some screws and brackets still need to be removed before removing the battery, and the video documenting this process shows that it takes some effort to reach the pull tabs under the batteries. But still, this new layout cuts the process by hours compared to previous models.
“The fact that you can remove the battery without having to remove every major component inside this device is a huge win in terms of repairability,” Mokhtari says in the video. “This is a huge improvement over previous generations.” On the other hand, everything else looks like it will be pretty difficult to repair. “From Daughterboard to speakers to coaxial cables, we found that many things were glued down because there was no room for screws due to lack of space.”
Additionally, the teardown video shows that the new Apple Pencil Pro is a complete nightmare in terms of repairability. Mokhtari states that he was injured while trying to reach the Pencil’s internals, describing it as “a piece of garbage that will be thrown away when the battery dies”.
