Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that the access block imposed on the Instagram social media platform will be lifted as of 21.30 this evening. Minister Uraloğlu, in his statement on the X platform, emphasized that the State of the Republic of Turkey is sensitive in its relations with social media platforms, especially in meeting demands within the framework of catalog crimes.
Minister Uraloğlu reminded that Instagram was blocked on August 2 on the grounds that it did not comply with the laws of the Republic of Turkey. He stated that this decision was taken because the platform did not meet the demands for catalog crimes. Stating that Turkey has demanded from the beginning that social media platforms respect national laws, Uraloğlu explained that intensive negotiations have been carried out with Instagram officials in this context.
An agreement was reached with Meta within the scope of catalog crimes
Stating that as a result of the negotiations, Meta officials made a commitment to meet the demands, especially regarding catalog crimes, Uraloğlu noted that the platform promised to carry out a joint study on the censorship policies to be applied to users in this regard. Uraloğlu announced that after these commitments are received, the access block to Instagram will be lifted as of August 10 at 21.30.
This access block applied specifically to Instagram has once again brought to the fore Turkey’s regulations on social media platforms and the attitude of these platforms regarding compliance with national laws. Turkey expects close cooperation from social media platforms, especially on issues such as protecting children, preventing terrorist propaganda and taking measures against other catalog crimes. In this context, the agreement reached with Meta can serve as an example for other social media platforms.
