As activity continues in the social media world, Bluesky is preparing to launch its own photo sharing application, Flashes. Berlin based developer Designed by Sebastian Vogelsang Flashes runs on AT Protocol, Bluesky’s open protocol. In this way, Flashes will be fully integrated with Bluesky’s existing social network.
Flashes will allow users to share slideshows of up to four photos or one-minute videos. The main feature of the app is that it focuses only on visual content and filters out text-based posts. Users will be able to see the posts they make on Flashes on Bluesky and vice versa.
Vogelsang states that Flashes does not aim to be an Instagram copy, but wants to offer a simpler user experience. Flashes can be a minimalist alternative, especially for users who are uncomfortable with the complexity of Meta applications.
Bluesky’s growth accelerated after Elon Musk acquired Twitter (now known as X). However, the platform still lags behind giants like Meta or TikTok, with around 27.5 million active users. Still, its open source and decentralized structure offers an attractive option for users.
Vogelsang, the developer behind Flashes, had previously developed an application called Skeets for Bluesky users, where he focused specifically on accessibility. Stating that Flashes uses Skeets’ infrastructure, Vogelsang plans to launch Blue Screen, a new video-focused application, in the future.
Flashes is expected to be available within a few weeks. TestFlight beta version will also meet users in this process. Those who want to follow the developments can follow the Flashes account on Bluesky.
