The first three months of 2024 have not been bright for the iPhone. Despite a recovery across the smartphone industry, iPhone shipments fell 9.6 percent globally, according to IDC data. Led by Samsung, global shipments increased by 7.8 percent compared to the previous year, reaching 289.4 million units.
Samsung’s Galaxy S24 series was launched equipped with Galaxy AI features, helping the manufacturer ship 60.1 million phones in the three-month period. Although this figure indicated a decrease of 0.7 percent on an annual basis, it enabled Samsung to maintain its industry leadership and have a market share of 20.8 percent.
It would not be wrong to say that the 9.6 percent annual decline in Apple’s iPhone shipments in the first quarter of 2024 proved that there was a difficult period for the company. Because Apple shipped 50.1 million iPhones between January and March, falling to second place. iPhone’s global market share decreased to 17.3 percent during this period. Xiaomi, one of the fastest growing companies in this period, rose to third place with an increase of 33.8 percent and shipped 40.8 million smartphones.
One of the most notable successes of the quarter belongs to China-based Transsion, which has been posting big gains for months. Transsion sells its phones in Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Latin America. The company’s shipments in this quarter increased by 84.9 percent, reaching 28.5 million phones. Oppo delivered 25.2 million phones in the first quarter, becoming the fifth largest smartphone manufacturer. However, for Oppo, this means a decrease of 8.5 percent compared to last year.
