Is 8 GB RAM Enough for Macs? Statement from Apple!

With the launch of the M3 MacBook Pro last year, many analysts criticized Apple for still selling Macs with 8GB of RAM. At the time, Apple said 8GB on a Mac was equivalent to 16GB of RAM on a Windows PC. Now, the company again argues that it is in favor of selling Macs with 8 GB RAM in 2024.

Mac marketing manager Evan Buyze talked about Macs with 8GB of RAM in an interview with IT Home. According to Buyze, 8GB of RAM on entry-level Macs is sufficient for most tasks most users do with these computers. Buyze cited web browsing, media playback, photo and video editing, and casual gaming as examples.

AppleKate Bergeron, ‘s vice president of hardware engineering, and another Apple executive last year said that the processors the company uses can use the RAM in Macs more efficiently.

8 GB RAM Is Still Enough, According to Apple

The interview focuses on the recently released M3 MacBook Air and the answer given is partially correct. Essentially, users can perform most basic tasks without any problems with 8 GB of RAM, but those who plan to use their Mac for video editing or programming may encounter some disadvantages due to the need for more RAM.

In the interview, Apple executives also talked about how Apple processors are ideal for artificial intelligence-based tasks. They also mentioned that Apple is focusing on making the Mac a great gaming platform, thanks to improved hardware and new macOS features like the Game Porting Toolkit.

Ultimately, it can be accepted that 8 GB of RAM is sufficient for daily use, but in a future where artificial intelligence features that will work locally will come, it is likely that we will start to see configurations with a minimum of 16 GB of RAM.
