The Rubik’s Cube, invented by Hungarian sculptor Erno Rubik in the 1970s, stands out as the most famous three-dimensional puzzle. The fastest person to solve the puzzle is just over 3 seconds. Robots, which were able to solve the puzzle in 1 minute and 4 seconds in 2009, improved over time and managed to go below 1 second in 2016. The last record was 0.38 seconds, achieved by a robot developed by two researchers from MIT in 2018. The Japanese team took the record one step further and managed to solve the cube in 0.305 seconds.
The team of five engineers, who began working on a prototype in September 2022, leveraged technologies designed to quickly and precisely position cables in electrical appliance motors such as air conditioners and ventilation fans. This technology only uses one of the six faces of the cube. It allowed it to rotate 90 degrees in 0.009 seconds.
This initiative was led by engineer Tokui from the Motor and Generator Manufacturing Engineering Department at Mitsubishi Electric’s Component Manufacturing Engineering Center. According to Tokui, breaking the record requires not only fast engines but also a synchronized set of components.
