Keyless car theft continues to increase

Car keys have begun to be replaced by smart key technology, especially in the last five or six years. Again, the car key literally changed its form when the key to start the car was replaced by buttons that turn the engine on and off. However, the increasing number of car theft cases in the UK in recent years has led to the question “Isn’t a keyless car safe?” It raises the question: In fact, this danger has been in our lives since the day keyless models first appeared. The interesting thing is that this problem is still not solved.

The keyless car problem, which has recently started to come to the fore in Turkey, has turned into a major crisis in the UK. Accordingly, thieves managed to imitate remote control car remote controls. In the latest case in England, thieves stole a Hyundai Ioniq 5 car in just 20 seconds.

In the video he watched, the owner of the car sees the thief open the doors with a remote control in his hand, start the engine and drive away silently. The fact that the electric car operates silently causes the driver to notice the theft only when he wakes up in the morning.

Although keyless car technology brings many conveniences, frequency-imitating emulators sold over the internet in many countries, including the UK, pose a danger. But how do these devices work? In fact, each remote control and vehicle has a different frequency. In other words, it is not possible to open the vehicle with another key of the same model. Here, thieves need to copy the remote control of the vehicle they target. However, it is not known from how far away this copying device can perform this operation.

It is thought that receiving the on-off signal is sufficient for the device to copy the frequency. It turns out that the device is currently sold online in the UK for around £5000.

Experts are of the opinion that these problems are increasing with the increase in keyless entry. In this sense, security experts accuse automobile companies of not taking additional security measures. Car drivers, on the other hand, started to use steering locks, which are an old security measure.

Especially electric car manufacturers use keyless entry technologies in almost every model. It is currently unclear whether these emulators are used in our country. In England, drivers are waiting for a solution to this problem from automobile companies. Insurance companies began to increase insurance premiums in England after increasing theft cases.

The interesting thing is that these keyless car thefts have been occurring since 2011. In the past, it was not known how this was done. However, according to some claims, automobile manufacturers have been aware of this vulnerability for about 10 years.
