MediaTek continues its innovative steps in the field of smartphone processors. The company announced the Dimensity 8400 model, which for the first time offers a CPU configuration consisting of only large cores in an upper mid-segment processor. MediaTek Dimensity 8400 stands out as a significant competitor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3, which has long dominated this segment in terms of performance.
Dimensity 8400 is equipped with eight Cortex-A725 cores. One of these cores can offer a high speed of up to 3.25 GHz. However, MediaTek states that this speed can only be valid for one core. Compared to the Dimensity 8300, this new processor provides a 41 percent increase in multi-core performance. It also significantly improves energy efficiency, offering up to a 44 percent reduction in power consumption.
While MediaTek doubled the L2 cache in the new processor, it increased the L3 cache by 50 percent and the SLC cache by 25 percent. While Dimensity 8400 supports displays with WQHD + resolution and up to 144 Hz refresh rate, it also brings modern connectivity features with LPDDR5X RAM, UFS 4.0 storage, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.
The Arm Mali-G720 MC7 GPU in the Dimensity 8400 offers 24 percent higher performance and 42 percent lower power consumption. It also promises a better experience, especially in mobile games, with touch latency optimizations. MediaTek NPU 880 integrated into the processor provides serious improvements in artificial intelligence performance. Offering a performance increase of up to 33 percent in text creation operations with large language models, NPU increases energy efficiency by 18 percent.
MediaTek Dimensity 8400 uses Imagiq 1080 as its image processing unit (ISP). While this unit supports up to 320 MP sensors, it consumes 12 percent less power in 4K HDR video recording. It also has advanced features such as in-sensor zoom with 100 percent PDAF and HDR video recording across the entire zoom range.
The new generation 5G-A modem provides fast connection by offering download speeds of up to 5.17 Gbps. This allows users to have a faster experience, especially in data-intensive applications.
MediaTek Dimensity 8400 will compete with Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3
MediaTek Dimensity 8400 draws attention not only with its technical features but also with its energy efficiency and artificial intelligence performance. This processor seems to reshape the competition in the upper middle segment. It is expected to offer an assertive alternative in terms of performance and efficiency, especially when compared to Snapdragon 7+ Gen 3.
