Mercedes became the first brand to receive a level 4 autonomous driving permit in China

Mercedes announced that it has started testing its level 4 autonomous driving systems on highways and urban roads in Beijing, China. The company states that this permission is the first for an international automobile manufacturer.

The German manufacturer confirmed that the tests have started via its Weibo account. The testing process uses special S-Series models equipped with a comprehensive sensor suite including multiple Lidar integrated into the ceiling in a curved unit.

Mercedes stated that the level 4 autonomous driving system was tested in various scenarios such as parking, reversing, advancing at intersections and being able to overcome traffic obstacles (roadworks, etc.) without human intervention. The prototype models, which are said to be able to slow down and pass on single-lane roads at highway toll booths, also have a backup system to increase safety.

Level 4 autonomous driving tests are ongoing in China, but vehicle owners are currently only allowed to use level 2 autonomous driving systems. On the other hand, the number of technology companies working on new systems is increasing. Therefore, there may be an update to these rules in the near future.

While autonomous driving studies in China continue, the Biden administration is preparing to introduce a bill that would ban autonomous driving systems with Chinese software in the United States. You can also review our news on the subject here.
