While Meta was preparing for the inauguration of the new US president, Donald Trump, he made a significant change in his policy team. Nick Clegg, the company’s head of global policy, announced that he will be stepping down after seven years. He was replaced by Joel Kaplan, known as a Republican. Kaplan served as Meta’s current vice president of policy.
In his statement on Facebook, Clegg stated that it was the right time to leave Meta and that he would spend the next few months handing over his duties to Kaplan. Clegg said about Kaplan: “Joel is the right person to shape the company’s strategy in this period when social and political expectations about technology are constantly evolving.”
Joel Kaplan joined Meta in 2011 after serving as vice president in the White House in the George W. Bush administration. In 2018, Kaplan drew the reaction of some employees within the company when she supported Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh at the Senate hearing on sexual assault accusations. However, Kaplan’s recent meeting with Donald Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance at the New York Stock Exchange also attracted attention.
Meta donated $1 million to Donald Trump’s inauguration
Mark Zuckerberg, on the other hand, has taken steps to get closer to the President in recent months, despite experiencing various tensions with Trump in the past. While Meta donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration, Zuckerberg had a meeting with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in November.
Before joining Meta in 2018, Nick Clegg served as deputy prime minister in the UK as a member of the Liberal Democrats Party. At Meta, he led policy reforms, especially after the Cambridge Analytica scandal. Clegg has made important decisions on issues such as combating misinformation and banning Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts during the COVID-19 pandemic. But in a statement in December, he acknowledged that Meta had been “too intrusive” regarding content moderation.
Regarding Clegg’s departure, Mark Zuckerberg said, “You have made a significant impact in advancing Meta’s values and vision around the world. “I am excited to have Joel take on this role,” he said.
Following Kaplan’s appointment, Kevin Martin will take over as Meta’s vice president of global policy. Martin previously served as the Republican chairman of the Federal Communications Commission.
