New claim for Galaxy Z Flip 6 cover screen

Introduced last year, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 came with a larger cover screen compared to its predecessors, thus providing more flexibility in use when the phone is folded. Galaxy Z Flip 6 will also come with a similarly large cover screen. However, according to a new claim, there will be a step backwards in panel technology.

According to leaked promotional materials, the cover screen of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 will use an IPS LCD panel. Z Flip 5 has a Super AMOLED cover screen. This also constitutes a technological regression.

While OLED displays display black colors, they operate more power-efficiently because the pixels are turned off to display blacks. Therefore, it seems likely that power consumption will increase when using the “always on screen” feature in the Z Fold 6. The ability to turn off pixels one by one when displaying black tones also causes blacks to be darker compared to IPS LCD screens.

Samsung may have made this decision to reduce the cost of Galaxy Z Flip 6

However, LCD panels are less prone to screen burn compared to OLED displays. In short, although OLED screen burn-in is not as big a problem as it used to be, it is possible to understand this decision in terms of durability. Also, LCD screens are cheaper than OLED panels. This suggests that Samsung may have also made this decision to maintain or reduce component costs. Z Flip 6 will be officially revealed on July 10.
