As part of its long-running fight against realistic-looking manipulated images, Google has rolled out updates that will make deepfake content harder to find. These updates aim to make it easier to remove fake images created without people’s consent from Search results.
Google’s fight against deepfake images
Under Google’s policies, it has long been possible for users to request removal of such images. However, with the new update, once a person’s removal request is approved, Google will also filter out all open results for similar searches. The company’s systems will scan for copies of the image in question and remove them as well. This update aims to reduce victims’ concerns about the same image appearing again on other sites.
In addition, Google’s ranking systems have also been updated. If a user searches for explicit deepfakes with a specific person’s name, the results are changed to show “high-quality, non-explicit content.” For example, if there are news articles about that person, those will be included in the results. According to Google’s statement, these results may also include results discussing the social impact of deepfake content.
Google does not want to destroy legitimate content in an effort to remove deepfake content from search results. For example, he does not want legitimate content, such as an actor’s nude scene in his movie, to be deleted. In this regard, Google admits that it still needs to work hard on distinguishing between real and fake exploits. One of its solutions is to drop sites that receive high volumes of removal requests for manipulated images from search results. Google states that such sites are not “high quality sites”, adding that this approach has been successful for other types of harmful content in the past.
