Why was Instagram closed?

Information Technologies and Communications Authority (BTK), made an unexpected post in the morning. With the decision taken, Instagram, one of the world’s most popular social media applications, was blocked in Turkey. But the reason was not disclosed.

Only in the shared statement: “Instagram.com, dated 2 August 2024 and numbered 490.05.01.2024.-608903 Information Technologies and Communications Authority “Access has been blocked by decision.” Many different rumors arose about this. The deputy minister said in his social media post:

“When it comes to Western countries, we see that social media platforms quickly take measures on many issues, especially Catalog Crimes. We demand the same sensitivity and fair stance from the beginning. We want the safe, clean and fair content mechanism that these platforms offer in countries where they comply with their rules to be valid in Turkey as well.

This double standard applied by providers is a common problem all over the world. Let’s remember this: We said, come and open representative offices in our country, let’s prevent violations of our people’s rights. They didn’t want to come. They did not take the necessary steps against the crimes reported to them.

We said let’s build a cleaner internet together and let our nation talk to each other, but they did pretend work with some virtual offices. With the changes we made in the law, we prevented all this backdooring. We see that they are still trying to maintain the same understanding.

They say, “I read what I know, I publish what I want, I don’t publish what I want.” We did not accept this and we will not accept it. “We will do whatever it takes to establish a cleaner and safer social media that respects our values, is free of disinformation.”
