Lithium-ion batteries have a charging life of 500 to 1000 cycles, depending on the type of use and the structure of the battery. However, scientists have found a way to recharge dead batteries. Researchers have prepared a special injection for batteries that cannot be used after the end of the charging cycle.
This prepared injection enables the reuse of spent lithium-ion batteries. Researchers at the Toyota R&D laboratory have developed a lithium naphthalene-based injection.
Thanks to this injection, dead batteries at the end of the charging cycle regained their former power by 80 percent. According to preliminary results, dead batteries can be reused for at least 100 cycles thanks to this mixture.
The researchers also reminded that how structurally sound the battery is can change the result. Because structurally deformed batteries cannot become reusable even with this injection.
Although electric car batteries have longer charging cycles than mobile phone batteries, this varies depending on usage. This makes the recharge injection developed for the dead battery even more important.
Injection, which recharges spent lithium-ion batteries, will thus allow old batteries to re-enter the economy. In particular, there is a possibility that a concept such as recharging the battery instead of battery replacement will come into our lives.
Although a way has been found to recharge even dead batteries, it is important to use lithium-ion batteries carefully. Not leaving these rechargeable batteries charged for a long time and starting to charge them before they are completely exhausted prolongs their life. Leaving the phone plugged into the charger at night is also among the factors that affect battery health. However, smartphones released in recent years largely prevent damage to the battery by cutting off the current when the battery is full.
