NVIDIA discovered design flaws in its new Blackwell AI chip series. This unfortunate situation, which is a big enough problem to cause postponement, may delay the release date of the chips by at least three months. The company began informing its customers, including Microsoft, about this delay. So why is it delayed? Here are the details..
NVIDIA Blackwell AI chips are lagging
Large orders of NVIDIA Blackwell chips were scheduled to ship later this year, but are now expected to be delayed until early 2025. In addition to Microsoft, Google, Meta and other large companies have also placed bulk orders for these chips. All these companies will have to wait, even if they will make a loss.
When NVIDIA announced the Blackwell series AI chips in March, it stated that it would offer 30 times more performance than the current flagship H100 and could reduce cost and energy consumption by 25 times. However, it does not currently seem possible to achieve these goals due to design problems that emerged at a very late stage of the production process.
NVIDIA and chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) are conducting test production runs to resolve the issues. The first major shipments are not expected until the first quarter of 2025. We will see how this delay will affect giant companies such as Google, Meta, OpenAI and Microsoft in the coming days.
