OpenAI’s popular artificial intelligence-based chatbot ChatGPT is being developed with a new feature to rival search engines. According to Bloomberg, the company is working on a feature that can search for answers to users’ queries on the web and provide information by citing sources. This feature will allow ChatGPT to pull information from sources such as Wikipedia or blog posts and link to the original pages when users ask questions.
An experimental version of ChatGPT can display text responses as well as images when relevant. For example, for queries like “how to replace a door handle” or “how to clean a split-type AC,” the chatbot can include illustrated instructions or diagrams in its answers. ChatGPT can already make calls for paying customers, but may return incorrect answers or incorrect source references, Bloomberg notes.
Earlier this month, in a statement made by DataChaz on Twitter/X, it was reported that OpenAI had created a new subdomain called search.chatgpt.com. This domain was redirected to the main ChatGPT page for a short time, but now when trying to access it I get a “not found” warning. While the company hasn’t officially confirmed this initiative, working on AI search is a logical next step if it wants to continue competing with its biggest rivals.
Google also expanded its testing of AI-powered search results and started showing them to users who did not opt in to the feature. Additionally, a startup called Perplexity reached a $1 billion valuation thanks to an AI-powered search engine that responds to queries made through the R1 device used by Rabbit. Such developments increase the importance and potential of ChatGPT’s search engine capabilities.
This move by OpenAI can significantly improve ChatGPT’s user experience. An impressive user interface and the ability to provide high-fidelity information can make it a preferred tool for everyday searches.
