OpenAI introduced its feature called Operator, which opens the doors to a new era in artificial intelligence technologies. Operator is essentially an AI agent that can perform tasks using a web browser like a human. This innovative feature, based on the GPT-4o-based CUA (Computer-Using Agent) model, has the potential to transform AI from a passive tool to an active business partner.
How to use OpenAI Operator?
Operator can automate many tasks that users perform on their web browsers. It performs tasks such as making a restaurant reservation, completing grocery shopping or purchasing tickets online, using a keyboard and mouse like a human.
This system, which works without the need for API integration, operates by reading screenshots and interacting directly with graphical user interfaces. Operator’s working principle draws attention with its ability to solve the problems it encounters.
The system can correct itself when it makes a mistake, or when it cannot find a solution, it hands over control to the user and offers a collaborative experience. It prioritizes security, especially by automatically disabling sensitive areas such as passwords and payment information.
A multi-layered security system has been developed so that users can safely perform critical transactions. During the launch of Operator, the limits of its features and its potential for future development were also discussed. It currently has limited performance in complex interfaces, such as calendar management or slide preparation.
In the WebArena test, where human performance was 72 percent, Operator could only reach a 38 percent success rate. However, this does not change the fact that Operator will be constantly improved with user feedback.
As of now, Operator is only available to ChatGPT Pro users in the US. Users can purchase the $200 subscription package to experience this feature. OpenAI has not announced a timetable for use in Europe for this feature. It was emphasized that Operator was presented as a research preview and that feedback was of great importance to eliminate deficiencies in this process.
Operator’s future plans include allowing developers to create their own artificial intelligence agents via the CUA API and reaching a wider user base by integrating the system into ChatGPT.
It is also aimed to make it more capable in complex workflows. The operator aims to become an effective tool in long and detailed processes such as state procedures. This new technology is of great importance as it transforms artificial intelligence from being just a passive assistant into an active partner that can take action.
It has the potential to work on 99 percent of the web without requiring API integration. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman described this development as “The beginning of the age of spies” and underlined the innovations brought by Operator.
Additionally, OpenAI stated that Operator will be an effective tool in business as well as in daily life. The company is collaborating with major partners like DoorDash, Instacart, OpenTable, Priceline and Uber to expand Operator’s real-world uses.
In addition, efforts are being made to facilitate citizens’ access to services in cooperation with public institutions such as the City of Stockton. Such partnerships show that Operator has great potential not only for individual users, but also for the public and private sectors.
