OpenAI, which has an important place in the field of artificial intelligence, is preparing to take steps to produce its own artificial intelligence hardware. The company aims to avoid being dependent on the hardware of another company such as Nvidia in order to produce special solutions.
OpenAI started negotiations to produce its own processors
According to the news shared by Tom’s Hardware, OpenAI is currently in talks to produce its own artificial intelligence processors. These processors will most likely be the Neural Network Processing Unit (NPU).
NPUs, which are processors dedicated to artificial intelligence-related tasks, are found in artificial intelligence computers. Just as a GPU relieves the processor from graphics processing tasks, an NPU again relieves the processor from the task of processing information, as it is designed specifically to handle AI operations.
If this plan comes to fruition, OpenAI will likely abandon Nvidia’s hardware and replace it with NPUs it will produce. After this is completed, it can even start selling or renting the hardware to companies that want to provide it to public service. Although it is unlikely to see OpenAI branded hardware in consumer stores, it is not impossible.
Nvidia has distinguished itself in the artificial intelligence race and become the third most valuable company in the USA. When a company wanted to get into the AI field, it bought Nvidia hardware. Even OpenAI and Microsoft’s artificial intelligence initiatives were built on Nvidia hardware.
However, companies now want to avoid dependence on Nvidia hardware and produce their own solutions. However, this does not pose a problem for Nvidia. The company responded to these hardware moves by launching Chat With RTX, its own AI chatbot that provides solutions using the GPUs found in existing systems. Therefore, although Nvidia may lose its position in the artificial intelligence hardware market in the future, it is not out of the race.
