Android 16, which Google will release in 2025, may come with new features that improve the notification system. According to the codes revealed in the Android 15 beta version, this innovation, called “Rich Ongoing Notifications”, will allow permanent notifications for users to provide instant and continuous access to important information on Android devices. According to analysis by Mishaal Rahman from Android Authority, this feature is strengthened with new APIs that will allow users to easily follow the flow of information.
Extensive changes to the Android 16 notification system
The Rich Continuous Notifications feature offers functionality that can be useful to users, especially in intensive usage scenarios. For example, to constantly track the driver’s estimated arrival time in an Uber call or to continue seeing up-to-date information such as the weather, these notifications can persist the information provided by the applications directly in the notification bar. This new structure is, in a sense, similar to the Live Events feature introduced by the iPhone with iOS 16 and aims to offer a similar experience to Android users. Functions such as Live Activities simplify the user experience with information such as delivery and public transportation tracking, especially in busy city life.
In the examples prepared by Rahman, there is a constant “timed notification” icon in the users’ notification bar. These notifications are presented in a design visually similar to the live information updates in the “Dynamic Island” feature that comes with the iPhone 14 Pro. Considering the open source nature of Android, the integration of this innovation into third-party applications can also offer a wide range of usage. This feature, which will be available to users in many areas from transportation applications such as Uber to applications that track food orders and deliveries, is among the remarkable features of Android 16.
Additional innovations in the notification and quick settings section
It is stated that Android 16 will offer various updates to the notification system not only to permanent notifications but also to the general notification and quick settings panel. It is reported that in the new version, the notification panel has been rearranged to take up a smaller part of the screen and users will be able to access notifications with just the first swipe. While this update gives users more visual space, it can also speed up notification access and editing.
In addition, it is stated that in Android 16, the two-finger swipe gesture will be made mandatory to access the quick settings panel, thus preventing it from being opened with a single touch. This design may change users’ habits of accessing frequently used settings, but it is aimed to make the user experience more organized by having separate access points for notifications and quick settings.
