PUBG’s developer, Krafton, does not hold back from developing the mobile version of Palworld despite Nintendo’s lawsuit against Pocketpair. On Wednesday, Krafton announced that it has acquired the mobile license for Palworld and will optimize the game for mobile platforms. With this development, which was previously announced by Polygon, Krafton stated that the game will be made suitable for the mobile environment.
According to the statement, Krafton aims to “reinterpret the core entertainment elements of Palworld in the mobile environment.” Krafton had previously released the mobile version of PUBG in 2018 and had greater success than expected.
Dubbed “Pokémon with a Gun,” Palworld became an instant hit after launching on PC and Xbox platforms in January. Gamers bought millions of copies, driven by the thrill of catching creatures while exploring the massive Palpagos Islands. But last month, Nintendo and the Pokémon Company filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, claiming that the game infringed on various patent rights.
Pocketpair responded to these claims and stated that “they do not have clear information about which patents we are infringing.” Although Palworld was also released on the PlayStation 5 platform, the game’s launch in Japan has been postponed indefinitely. Nintendo, on the other hand, was not limited to Pocketpair, but also turned to Switch emulators and took steps that resulted in the closure of a popular emulator such as Ryujinx.
Palworld is in Nintendo’s sights
The mobile license that Krafton received for Palworld draws attention with the company’s past successes in mobile games. While the mobile version of PUBG has captured a wide player base, especially in the Asian market, Palworld aims to achieve a similar success. Although the legal process, especially with Nintendo, makes the future of the game in Japan uncertain, the interest of players around the world is high. Krafton plans to reach a wide audience by successfully optimizing the mobile version of the game.
The lawsuit filed by Nintendo against Pocketpair has caused great repercussions in the gaming industry. While it is known how sensitive Nintendo is especially about patent cases, this case also sets a remarkable example for other independent game developers. The mobile version of Palworld is seen as an important step for the future of the game and Krafton’s power in the mobile market.
