Qualcomm has won a landmark lawsuit against Arm Holdings, a British chip designer. The case centered on whether Qualcomm violated a licensing agreement after acquiring startup Nuvia in 2021. Nuvia’s chip designs were claimed to be based on Arm technology.
The jury sided with Qualcomm on the most critical issue, ruling that the company’s central processor chips were properly licensed under its agreement with Arm. This is a significant win for Qualcomm because it paves the way for the company to continue selling its chips, including those featuring Nuvia’s technology.
However, the decision was not entirely clear. The jury couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict on whether Nuvia violated licensing terms with Arm before it was acquired by Qualcomm. This leaves some uncertainty on the case and it is possible that this matter will be retried in the future.
Judge Maryellen Noreika, who presided over the case, encouraged both parties to resolve their dispute through mediation to avoid another lawsuit. Noreika, “I don’t think either side has a clear victory or would have a clear victory if this case were tried again.” he stated.
