In 2000, Russell Crowe made the most important breakthrough of his career with his role as Maximus Decimus Meridius in the movie “Gladiator” directed by Ridley Scott. This role earned Crowe the Best Actor award at the Oscars. Next year, Scott returns to the franchise in “Gladiator 2.” However, due to Maximus’ death at the end of the first film, Crowe has mixed feelings about the sequel.
“I’m a little uncomfortable about them making another movie because of course, being dead, I don’t have a say in what’s going to be done,” Crowe said on Kyle Meredith’s YouTube interview show. “But there are some things I hear that make me say, ‘No no no, this is not in the moral journey of the character.’ But you can’t say anything, this isn’t my place. I’m twenty feet underground… so we’ll see what happens.”
During the interview, Crowe stated that he is currently on a worldwide tour and will be performing a concert at the Colosseum in Rome, where Maximus fought in the arena. “I’ve had an incredible relationship with the Italian people for the last 24 years,” Crowe said. “Right now I’m Rome’s ambassador to the world. But that may change when a new Gladiator comes out. There’s a new, younger model coming next year. There’s a new Thunderbird… so that may change.”
Later in the interview, Crowe said he still remembers making that movie and was grateful for the doors it opened for him. However, he added that he felt some jealousy and sadness about the sequel. “There’s definitely a little bit of melancholy and a little bit of jealousy, because I remember when I had tendons,” he said.
The movie “Gladiator 2” will be in theaters on November 22.
