Samsung plans to add generative artificial intelligence (AI) features to its voice assistant Bixby. This innovation aims to further strengthen the company’s position in the smart devices market and could radically change the way users interact with their devices.
Bixby was first offered to users with Samsung’s Galaxy S8 smartphone model in 2017. Since then, it has aimed to enrich the user experience with many functionalities, from lifestyle recommendations to live translation. However, due to the nature of voice assistant technology, these systems often had limited conversational capabilities and were based more on simple query-response mechanisms.
Today, thanks to technologies like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, chatbots are capable of handling much more complex user queries. This technology, called generative AI, can generate responses to queries from users in the form of text, images and even video. Samsung’s plan to integrate this type of artificial intelligence into Bixby could pave the way for the assistant to have a more natural and fluent dialogue with users.
Bixby is available in a wide range of products, from the company’s smartphones to smart watches to home appliances. Samsung positions Bixby as an essential tool that allows you to easily control devices in the home. However, so far Bixby has not achieved the level of depth and interactivity offered by technologies such as ChatGPT.
This move by Samsung to add more advanced AI features to smart devices includes the introduction of new features under the name Galaxy AI with the Galaxy S24 series smartphones. These new features include an option that allows users to circle something on their screen and search on Google, eliminating the need to switch between apps.
Samsung is ready to take serious steps to strengthen Bixby with artificial intelligence. As Won-joon Choi, Executive Vice President of Samsung Mobile Business, stated in an interview with CNBC, the company aims to redefine the role of Bixby and make it smarter by equipping it with generative AI technology. Choi stated that this development will provide a more natural conversation in the Samsung product ecosystem and develop a more compatible interface with Samsung devices. However, no clear timeline was provided for when Bixby would get these new features, although Samsung stated that it was “working hard” to deliver these features.
This development comes amid growing investor curiosity about what competitors like Apple have to offer in the field of generative AI. Apple will likely unveil how it will integrate AI features into its products at WWDC, its annual developers conference. Samsung’s Bixby and other AI initiatives demonstrate its determined steps to maintain its leadership in the smart device market and further improve the user experience.
