US businessman Elon Musk and his SpaceX are facing federal investigations initiated by the US Department of Defense (Pentagon) and two different military units for violating reporting protocols. According to The New York Times, it is alleged that Musk and SpaceX have repeatedly failed to fulfill their obligation to report their meetings with some foreign leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin.
These investigations are being conducted by the Department of Defense’s Office of Inspector General, the Air Force, and the Pentagon’s Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence and Security. The news states that the Air Force rejected Musk’s request for high-level security access. It is stated that this decision was taken due to the security risks that may occur if Musk accesses confidential information.
Some SpaceX employees expressed concern that Musk’s open posting about meetings on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) could harm his ability to protect sensitive information. Musk already has a high-level security clearance at SpaceX and has access to some classified information about the US’s advanced military technologies. However, it is claimed that the obligations to report some information about his personal life and travel habits requested by the Ministry of Defense have not been fulfilled since 2021.
The news alleges that Musk did not inform US officials about his full travel schedule, including his meetings with foreign leaders. It is also alleged that he did not share information about his personal habits and prescription drug use. Events such as Musk smoking marijuana on Joe Rogan’s podcast and talking about ketamine use on X are also noted as remarkable details in this context.
Concerns about Musk’s ability to protect classified information are not limited to America. According to The New York Times, nine countries in Europe and the Middle East evaluated Musk’s presence as a security risk in meetings with US defense officials in the last three years. Some of the employees stated that they did not file any complaints for fear of losing their jobs when Musk violated loose control procedures.
It is not yet clear what course of action the US military institutions will follow in the face of these allegations, but this situation has brought about a great debate at both national and international levels.
