All conversations were stored without password
macOS Mojave 10.14 includes a new security feature that blocks access to private user data to prevent malware and applications from accessing personal data belonging to other applications. Applications that need to access private user data such as calendars, contacts, e-mails and photos require explicit user permission. However, the ChatGPT Mac app does not store user data in Apple’s recommended sandbox location. Conversations are stored in plain text in an unprotected location. This means any app can access private user data.
Update released
After this security issue was revealed, OpenAI updated the ChatGPT application for macOS. Private data stored locally is now encrypted.
