By harnessing the influencer power of the younger generation, the gaming and advertising industries are often able to shape their desires. In America, families of the Uvalde victims filed a lawsuit against Activision and Meta, questioning this interaction.
Following the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, families of the victims are suing not only gaming industry giants like Activision and Meta, but also weapons manufacturer Daniel Defense.
The families who filed the lawsuit are represented by attorney Josh Koskoff, who previously brokered settlements for the families of Sandy Hook victims.
Activision and Meta are being sued for setting a bad example!
The claim made in the lawsuit filed against the technology companies is this: “Over the last 15 years, America’s two largest technology giants, in collaboration with the firearms industry, supported a plan that would dwarf even the Joe Camel campaign.”
The lawsuit specifically describes Activision’s popular “Call of Duty” video game franchise as “a persuasive form of marketing that helped create a new, younger consumer base for the AR-15 assault rifle.”
The lawsuit alleges that Instagram, the photo and video-sharing app owned by Meta, “knowingly promulgated flimsy rules that ostensibly prohibited firearms advertising but could be easily circumvented; in effect, these rules served as a playbook for the gun industry.”
Activision said in a statement that it “sends its condolences to the families affected by this tragic incident of violence” and continued: “Scientific research consistently shows that video games do not have a causal relationship with gun violence.”
