Size comparison of the national warplane KAAN and other aircraft

Let’s remember that as of today, the combat-ready fifth generation fighter planes are;

  • Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor (April 2005)
  • Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II (Temmuz 2015)
  • Chengdu J-20 (Mart 2017)
  • Sukhoi Su-57 (December 2020)

Türkiye and other national/international projects are in the development stages. The defining characteristics of such a fifth-generation fighter are not universally agreed upon, and not every fifth-generation aircraft will necessarily have all the features briefly outlined below.

  • Security: Fifth-generation fighters are designed to be stealthy, with a low radar cross-section (RCS) that makes them difficult to detect by radar. This capability includes internal storage of ammunition, double canted tails, etc. It is achieved through design changes. In addition, fifth-generation fighters have a high proportion of composite materials. This is also stated to help reduce RCS.

  • High maneuverability: These aircraft have high maneuverability with their advanced flight control systems and thrust vectoring capabilities. They also tend to have short field capabilities, meaning they can take off and land on relatively short runways.

  • Supercruise: Able to sustain supersonic speeds for long periods of time without the use of reheating, generations of five can quickly travel great distances and respond to a wide range of threats.

  • Advanced avionics: Advanced avionics systems, which enable them to collect and process information from various sources, including radar, sensors and other aircraft, are among the key differentiators of this generation.
  • Networked data fusionWhile it is possible for these aircraft to travel alone in the air, they can also perform comprehensive missions in conjunction with other assets. They can operate jointly with other aircraft, ground-based systems, and other systems on the networked battlefield. This helps raise awareness.

  • Multi-purpose abilities: Since these aircraft are quite expensive, forces generally want them to be able to do everything. Therefore, they can be used in a wide variety of missions, including air-to-air, island-to-ground attack and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR). These aircraft also demonstrate capabilities such as command, control and communications.

These features are generally included in all fifth generation fighter jets. Of course, countries can choose different approaches for their aircraft in line with their needs. Türkiye, ANOTHERis now obsolete F-16 replace the fleet Developing for. There are still years left for KAAN to fully enter service and become the backbone of the Air Force. For this reason, it is aimed to close the gap that will be created with F-16 Block 70s (Viper). We should also note that F-16 Vipers are referred to as 4.5 generation with their upgraded radars.

How big is TUSAŞ KAAN?

By the way, let us note that the images showing size comparisons were provided by X user @selcuk_ix. Finally, you can make a comparison of general features in the table below. However, it is important to remember that KAAN is still in the development phase and technical specifications may change.
