The physical media scenario is slowly becoming obsolete, especially with digital streaming and gaming media dominating the current market. As a result, many companies are giving up on physical media. Finally, Sony from Japan also decided to follow the same direction by discontinuing recordable Blu-ray production. Here are the details…
Sony is bringing the end of an era!
Sony Storage Media Solutions plans to end Blu-ray production next February. In addition, the production of recordable MiniDiscs, MD-Data and MiniDV cassettes will be duly terminated.
It is also worth noting that the company mentioned during the announcement that “there will be no successor models” for these products. Therefore, the closure is clearly due to withdrawal rather than planning to introduce advanced technology or something like that.
Another point that may be confusing is that this change will only affect recordable discs, famously known as “blank CDs”. Blu-rays of movies and games are not affected by this change.
Sony’s discontinuation of recordable disc production was something the company had been signaling since last year. The company essentially said in a statement to Japanese channel AVWatch that it would “phase out the development and production of writable optical discs.”
Sony was a strong name in Blu-ray disc production in the early 2000s. But lately, we see that this is gradually decreasing and the real “culprit” is increasing technological developments. So what do you think about this development?
