SpaceX announced that it successfully completed the second stage after the engine failure in the last Falcon 9 launch. The Merlin 1D engine on the Falcon 9’s second stage suffered RUD or was destroyed in space after failing to initiate a burn to raise its orbit.
In its statement after the engine failure, SpaceX stated that a leak in the liquid oxygen tank in the second stage of Falcon 9 caused the accident. He announced that the second stage was pacified after the leak. The latest crash of the Falcon 9 was recorded as a rare error.
This comes as SpaceX is pushing the limits of its first stage boosters and aims to deliver at least 140 missions by 2024. But with the Falcon 9 currently grounded due to an FAA investigation, it seems unlikely it will achieve the company’s flight goals.
In Elon Musk’s statements after the engine failure, it was stated that the Falcon 9 second stage engine experienced RUD. The company stated that the second stage’s Merlin vacuum engine was successfully ignited after separation, but experienced an anomaly during the second burn to raise its orbit and could not complete this burn.
The statement also emphasized that it was able to deploy the satellite after the second stage, but no further information was given about the status of the engine. SpaceX added that it successfully pacified the second stage according to the parameters monitored after each mission.
For Starlink satellites, SpaceX states that they pose no threat to the public or other spacecraft in orbit. SpaceX’s Polaris Program is in limbo as the rocket was grounded by the FAA after engine failure. A clearer explanation about the company’s programs may come in the coming days.
