In recent years, Stephen King’s works have often been adapted to cinema, but television will soon open its doors to King’s world. Following HBO’s “Welcome to Derry” project, MGM+ is also bringing Stephen King’s novel “The Institute” to the screens.
Stephen King’s “The Institute” is being adapted for television
Stephen King’s science fiction/horror novel “The Institute”, published in 2019, is being adapted for television and Ben Barnes and Mary-Louise Parker will star in the leading roles.
This new eight-episode series is brought to life by executive producer and EP Jack Bender and co-producer/writer Ben Cavell. While Bender is known for the episodes he directed in series such as “Lost” and “Game of Thrones”, Cavell worked on productions such as “Justified” and “The Stand”. The duo has experience adapting King’s works for the small screen. Cavell describes King as “more generous and collaborative than I could have ever imagined.”
The shooting of the series will begin in Nova Scotia later this year and the leading roles of the series have already been announced. Ben Barnes, whom we know from the TV series “Shadow & Bone”, will play former cop Tim Jamieson. Jamieson begins searching for a missing boy, Luke Ellis.
The main story of the series is that Luke is kidnapped because he has special powers and taken to the facility called The Institute, along with other children with similar powers. Mary-Louise Parker is the manager of this facility and works with a belief in the true purpose of the institution. He will portray the character Sigsby.
MGM+ began its King adaptations with “Chapelwaite” in 2021, and network president Michael Wright hopes The Institute will be an “exciting addition” to the MGM+ original series lineup.
“There is no one I trust more than Jack and Ben in the creative team that will bring the book to life,” Wright said, adding that the team will bring King’s voice to its best and bring this thought-provoking and heartbreaking story to life in the cinematic and exciting style that MGM+ audiences have come to expect.
