The decision taken as a result of the investigation carried out after the raids organized by the European Commission on automobile manufacturers in 2021 was taken on the grounds that the car companies mentioned in 2002 and September 2017 to create a cartel for car scrap and to sign hidden agreements in order to limit the competition in the vehicle recycling process.

If we land behind the scenes, according to the European Union legislation, automobile manufacturers are obliged to recycle vehicles that have completed their life and meet the costs related to this process. In this way, vehicle owners can deliver their scrapped vehicles to recycling facilities free of charge.

However, 15 car manufacturers and ACEA mentioned in the investigation are reported to act jointly in order to hide some information about recycling processes and to prevent consumers from being offered more environmentally friendly options.

Volkswagen, who signed the most violation within the scope of the investigation, was fined 127.69 million euros, Stellantis was sentenced to 99.5 million euros, Renault-Nissan 81.46 million euros and Ford was sentenced to 41.46 million euros. In addition, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Gm, Suzuki and Volvo were also subjected to a slight fine and various sanctions compared to these brands.

According to those transferred, Mercedes, who was said to carry out similar activities with 15 car brands sentenced to a fine, was saved from receiving the penalty for notifying the authorities of the European Union.
