Carbon negative era in concrete
A team at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the United States, “BUILD’EM” is working on an innovative project called. Project leader Paul Meyer and his team used concrete production waste lignin instead of cement They developed an environmentally friendly binder using materials obtained from biomass.
Lignin cross-links in a manner similar to epoxy resins, creating a polymer-based binder. This binder can be processed at much lower temperatures than the cement used in concrete production (60°C to 200°C compared to 1450°C) and does not emit carbon emissions. Additionally, the use of lignin sequesters CO2 in the form of biomass before it escapes into the atmosphere.
In other words, this new “green concrete” not only reduces CO2 emissions in concrete production, but also captures some of the CO2 that will be released. This is very important because concrete production alone approximately 7 percent of global carbon emissions why is this happening.
