The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) is developing a system to replace the world’s fastest supercomputer at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Frontier, controlled by the USA, will be replaced by a new supercomputer called Discovery in the next five years. In this context, it is planned to collect a budget and develop a computer that is five times more powerful.
The most powerful supercomputer will be Discovery in 2028
Discovery will deliver at least 3-5 times more computing performance than Frontier between 2027-2028 8.5 exaflopsIt aims for a performance of . This looks set to solidify the United States’ leadership position in the supercomputer field.
Discovery is intended to support scientific research in areas such as artificial intelligence, climate change, drug discovery and renewable energy. In this context, Discovery; It will contribute to the fields of simulation, data analysis, machine learning and artificial intelligence.
Scientists also aim to overcome challenges in areas such as nuclear safety, sustainable aviation, new material development and climate change modelling. Georgia Tourassi, ORNL Deputy Chief Information Officer, said Discovery will “push the boundaries of what is possible.”
ORNL; Jaguar is known as the unit that developed the previous fastest supercomputers such as Titan and Summit. Discovery also looks set to increase the laboratory’s high-performance computing power.
Budget proposals for Discovery are expected to be submitted in August. The system is aimed to become operational in 2027 and overcome important scientific problems through simulation and data analysis.
