When it comes to cyber security, brand new information has come that it is necessary to confirm every news and every information given over and over again: Accordingly, the information that more than 10 billion passwords in total have been stolen, which has stirred the technology world since last month, turned out to be fake. Here are the details about how this news came out and the danger it brings with it…
More than 10 billion passwords have not been stolen: So where did this come from?
The password leak, known as RockYou2024 and claimed to contain approximately 10 billion user information, was described as far from being a real leak, as a result of the investigations of a cyber security researcher.
A detailed investigation by Ata Hakcil, WizCase’s cyber security research team leader, revealed that most of the leak consisted of fake data produced by artificial intelligence. When Hakcil examined the 155 GB file, it removed random and illegible lines that most websites would not accept and passwords shorter than 6 characters from the equation.
When Hakcil narrowed the list down to passwords containing 6 to 12 characters, the total number was 5.9 billion. to password fell. The cybersecurity expert did this process over and over again and discovered that the allegedly stolen passwords were a collection of random digits and numbers generated one after the other by a simple algorithm. In summary, the 10 billion passwords allegedly stolen were just codes produced by artificial intelligence.
So why went to all this trouble? This is where a conspiracy theory comes into play. As you may remember, some media that uploaded the database containing these 10 billion passwords to their websites would tell you whether your password was on the list or not by typing your own password.
Or… Did they create such a cover from the very beginning of the process to obtain your password?
At this stage, the decision is yours. We recommend that you immediately set a different password if you have entered your password on such sites, just in case.
