Microsoft was very meticulous about protecting its own intellectual property at the time. But it turned out that this meticulous technology giant did not pay much attention when using a famous product. Here’s the exact story: One of those popular wallpapers for Windows XP was actually borrowed, but without the owner’s knowledge. The interesting thing is that the owner of the wallpaper actually bought it from somewhere else without permission. Here are the details…
Microsoft Windows XP wallpaper used without permission
As explained by the Windows Aesthetics account on Twitter, a wallpaper in the “Royale” theme that Microsoft introduced for Windows XP Media Center Edition and XP in 2005 was taken from DeviantArt. This wallpaper was shared by DeviantArt user “Judge” in 2003 under the name “Grassy”.
But of course, the story doesn’t end there. Judge actually created this image by being inspired by the work of another user named “Americanpsycho” titled “Where Are You Going” in 2002. So, there is a two-layered “use without permission” situation here. The person who took Microsoft’s Windows XP wallpaper without permission also took it from someone else. That’s why he can’t claim any rights.
Microsoft New Zealand office took this image from DeviantArt and added it to the “Royale” theme. The location of the landscape seen in the original wallpaper is still unknown. Maybe it’s somewhere, maybe it’s imaginary. Various edits were made to the image, reflections and doublings were added. Even the source of the original photo has become a mystery.
In a brief discussion on DeviantArt, Judge stated that he tried to reach Microsoft but received no response. Of course, this was not easy to digest. What are you thinking? You can write your opinions in the comments section below.
