An unexpected event at the Paris Olympics has stirred the sports world: The Canadian Women’s National Football Team is accused of spying on the rival teams they will face in the tournament with a spy drone. Here are these interesting developments and the reactions from the sports world…
Spy Drone followed New Zealand football team
The incident emerged ahead of the match between Canada and New Zealand on Thursday. Players from the New Zealand team noticed a drone flying over them during training in Saint-Étienne on Monday. Later investigations revealed that a similar flight had occurred three days earlier, on Friday.
After hearing about this espionage attempt, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) immediately issued an apology. In the statement, it was emphasized that the committee defended fair-play to the end and was shocked and disappointed by what happened. The COC expressed its apologies to the New Zealand Football Federation, all affected players and the New Zealand Olympic Committee.
Following this situation, two Canadian Olympic Team members, one of whom was an assistant coach, who were thought to be connected to the scandal, were officially fired from the team and sent back to their countries.
Although Bev Priestman, the head coach of the Canadian team, stated that she had no role in the incident, she offered to resign for the New Zealand match and her offer was accepted by the federation and she too was dismissed.
Following these developments, FIFA’s disciplinary committee launched an official investigation into the incident. On the other hand, the Canadian National Football Team will be allowed to play in the Olympics.
