Threads, the social media platform created by Meta leaving Instagram and competing with Twitter, was launched on July 5, 2023. Over the past year, this new social network has reached 175 million monthly active users. Mark Zuckerberg himself announced this news (via Threads, of course).
Threads initially grew at a dizzying pace, reaching 100 million users just 5 days after launch. Growth has slowed slightly since then, but the network continues to expand – reporting 130 million users in February and 150 million in April.
The Threads team is celebrating reaching 175 million users with a silent celebration by introducing new custom icons. The mobile app received an update that allows users to choose from 5 different icons in addition to the default icon. A new icon will be added every day, and you can find them in the Your Profile tab of the app (by clicking on the birthday cake icon). Note that these special icons are only available for a limited time and you must choose one by July 12th.
The Threads network is also connected to Meta’s other platforms. As of June 25, users in more than 100 countries can make their posts available for sharing to the broader fediverse.
Instagram reports that 63% of all posts on Threads are text-only. Despite this, a quarter of posts on the network contain at least one photo. Along with text and photos, voice notes are also becoming increasingly popular on Threads, but younger users are using this feature more often. You can check out Instagram’s post about interesting results from a survey of 2,000 users, from Gen Z to Boomers.
Threads has gained a significant place in the social media world by reaching a large user base in a short time, and we look forward to future developments.
