Meta is testing a new feature that will allow Threads users to see currently trending topics on the platform. The application started testing the feature, which it calls “The most talked about topics of the day”, in the USA. The statement on the subject was made by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg.
According to the information given by Meta; The feature will surface “hot topics that others are discussing” and will appear in search and be interspersed with posts in the app’s For You feed. Adam Mosseri, Instagram’s chief executive, said: “Trends will be determined by our artificial intelligence systems based on what people are currently engaging with in Threads.”
Interestingly, Threads will also show trends related to politics and elections. The company announced last week that it would no longer recommend political content in its recommendations unless users choose to do so. However, Meta confirmed that the restriction will not apply to the trending feature.
The statement sent by Meta to the Engadget site regarding the issue includes the following statements: “Political content may be an issue. We will only remove political topics if they violate our Community Guidelines or other applicable integrity policies.”
The addition of Trends was a long-awaited addition for many Threads users who wanted the service to become more useful as a source of real-time information and updates.
This feature was previously spotted in the employee version of the app. But it was unclear whether Meta would roll out the feature more broadly, given Mosseri’s desire to avoid “encouraging” conversations about “politics and hard news.”
Although artificial intelligence determines most of the highlights, Meta plans to make important touches on some issues. The statement made by the company includes the following statements: “A team of content experts will ensure that topics do not violate our Community Guidelines or other applicable codes of integrity and that topics are not duplicate, meaningless or misleading.”
Threads will expand its trending topics feature to more countries and languages
Threads is currently testing the trending topics feature with a small group. However, Mark Zuckerberg stated that they are working to offer this feature to a wider user base with more language support in the coming period.
