Popular video sharing platform TikTok has partially relaunched in the United States after an outage of about half a day. The company announced that they were in the process of restoring their services and thanked President Donald Trump for this.
TikTok stopped providing access to its users in the USA as of Sunday morning, and the application became temporarily unusable. The app showed a message that the services were “temporarily unavailable.” However, as of Sunday evening, TikTok’s mobile application and web version were gradually reopened.
Users are now greeted with “Welcome back!” message is displayed and the return of the service is attributed to President Trump. The message read, “Thanks to President Trump’s efforts, TikTok is back in the USA!” expressions are included.
Trump said in his statement that he would extend the sales process of TikTok by issuing a presidential decree on Monday, his first day in office. He also stated that companies supporting TikTok would not face any legal liability before the decree.
TikTok’s service providers Oracle and Akamai also reactivated their services based on Trump’s commitment. According to NPR and The Washington Post, the companies acted based on Trump’s statements.
Although the application is back online, it cannot be downloaded from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. This is explained by the fact that both platforms are concerned about the legal consequences of hosting TikTok. The ban on TikTok in the USA is still in effect and heavy fines are imposed on violators.
Users searching for the application were encountering informative messages about why TikTok was not available on the App Store and Google Play.
On the other hand, TikTok seems confident that it is restructuring its services. In a memo to advertisers, the company said its services will soon be available again for the majority of users in the US. However, it was stated that there may be restrictions on some live campaigns.
The TikTok ban has been on the agenda with many uncertainties in recent days. The company lost in the US Supreme Court on Friday, leaving no obstacle to the implementation of the ban. However, the Biden administration announced that the implementation of the ban was left to the next administration.
Despite this, Trump announced that TikTok’s sales process will be extended and the United States may have a 50 percent share through a possible joint venture. TikTok is trying to extend this deadline by showing open support for the Trump administration to avoid the ban.
Republican Senators Tom Cotton and Pete Ricketts opposed extending the effective date of the ban and argued that this situation had no legal basis. They praised major technology companies such as Apple, Google, Amazon and Microsoft for complying with the ban.
TikTok and its service providers Oracle, Akamai, Apple and Google have not yet made a new statement on the issue.
In its official statement, TikTok emphasized its goals of providing access to services to more than 170 million users in the United States and supporting 7 million small businesses. He also stated that they will continue to cooperate with the US administration for a long-term solution.
