Popular social media platform TikTok is literally racing against time to continue its operations in the USA. The law, passed by congress in recent months and signed by former president Joe Biden, left TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance in a difficult situation. Accordingly, the platform must be sold to an American company by January 19, 2025. Otherwise, TikTok will be banned in the USA.
Could Trump’s support be the only solution for TikTok?
While the court’s decision left TikTok’s future in the United States in limbo, a remarkable development occurred. Donald Trump, who won the presidential election, said he would save TikTok during the campaign. This is in stark contrast to Trump’s harsh statements towards the platform in the past.
Describing TikTok as a national security threat in his first term, Trump claimed that the application collected data from Americans and negatively affected young people.
Trump led Walmart and Oracle to make an agreement to purchase TikTok in 2020, but lost interest as the election approached. Now, Trump is making statements supporting TikTok’s stay in the USA. It is unclear why this has changed, but the fact that TikTok has 170 million American users may be effective in this decision.
Banning TikTok could be a huge change not only for the platform’s users but also for its digital content ecosystem. Despite all this, it is not yet clear whether TikTok will be able to find a way out with Trump’s support. As January 19, 2025 is rapidly approaching, the future of TikTok is being followed with interest both in the USA and around the world.
Do you think TikTok can avoid the ban with Trump’s support? Or is it necessary for ByteDance to reach an agreement with an American buyer? We are waiting for your comments!
