For the last 10 years, the most important share of the total R&D investments of the top 50 companies that have made the highest R&D investments is defense industry companies. It is stated that this rate, which was 55.5 percent in 2017, remains at very high levels, such as constantly above 65 percent in 2021, 2022 and 2023. The most significant proportion of defense industry R&D investments are made up of five large TSK Foundation companies such as Aselsan, TUSAŞ-TAI, Roketsan, TUSAŞ-TEI and Havelsan.
Although the report is positive for the defense industry, R&D investments of many other sectors and private sector companies have shrunk in real terms in the last four years. It is emphasized that in order to be ahead in global competition, the real contraction in private sector R&D should be prevented and R&D investments in automotive and white goods, which used to be stronger, should be increased again. It is also underlined that more attention should be paid to the lower layers of the era such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Virtual Reality, Cloud, Big Data Management and Cyber Security.
