It was carried out under the coordination of TÜBİTAK MAM Polar Research Institute. The 8th National Antarctic Science Expedition continues.
He also wants to draw attention to the rapid melting of glaciers in the polar regions, which is one of the consequences of global climate change. The team observed the depths and speed of melting by entering a few of the thousands of crevices in the glacier.
Work continues Shoesmith Glacier on Horseshoe Island The studies carried out clearly revealed the traces of climate change.
8th National Antarctic Science Expedition Leader Prof. Dr. Ersan Başar, Stating that they saw the severity and intensity of melting as they entered the glacial crevices, “There is serious melting in the layers of ice due to warming. These are situations that we have been encountering in Antarctica in recent times.” said.
Prof. Dr. Ersan Başar, Underlining that Antarctica is one of the places most affected by climate change, “Climate change has begun to be seen effectively all over the world. Unfortunately, we can see this in all glaciers in Antarctica, and the Arctic is also an affected region. If the glaciers end one day, this may be the end of the world. These glaciers need to be taken very good care of. The melting of these glaciers is global. “It is an issue directly related to warming.” he said.
Stating that one of the most important evidence of climate change is the melting of glaciers, Başar emphasized that glaciers formed millions of years ago are rapidly melting as a result of climate change and global warming.
Noting that the world’s past and everything is hidden in glaciers, Başar said, “Atmospheric events that took place millions of years ago and living life in today’s conditions are hidden in these ices. If one day we can understand these ices, reach their depths and solve the mystery there, we will be able to better understand the facts of life.” he said.
