According to news obtained by Reuters from sources knowledgeable about the subject, the Biden administration plans to introduce a bill banning Chinese software used in level 3 autonomous vehicles and above. This regulation would ban autonomous vehicles produced by Chinese companies not only from being sold but also from being tested on US roads.
The administration also plans to ban the use of vehicles with advanced wireless communications modules developed by China on U.S. roads. Under the bill, automakers and their suppliers will have to verify that connected vehicle and autonomous driving software is not developed by foreign sources such as China. In the statement, it was stated that the ministry is concerned about the national security risks associated with connected technologies in such vehicles.
The administration is concerned that connected vehicles could use driver monitoring systems to listen to or record passengers’ conversations or take control of the vehicle. Minister of Commerce Gina Raimondo emphasized the seriousness of these concerns and said, “National security risks are quite important. We decided to take action on this issue because this is a really serious issue.”
China’s embassy in Washington made a statement that electric vehicles are a global industry and that only division of labor, cooperation and fair competition can ensure technological progress. In the statement, which called on the USA to comply with market principles and international trade rules, it was requested to create an equal field for companies from all countries. The statement also stated that China will resolutely defend its legal rights and interests.
