Volvo VNL Autonom Kamyondesigned by Aurora and by Volvo will be produced. The truck was displayed at the ACT Expo in Las Vegas. This truck has a level 4 autonomous driving system called Aurora Driver. This system uses a variety of sensors, including high-resolution cameras, imaging radars, and a LiDAR sensor that can detect objects up to 400 meters away. Aurora’s technology has traveled billions of virtual kilometers for training and 1.5 million real kilometers on public roads. For safety purposes, the truck has “redundant steering, braking, communication, calculation, power management, energy storage and vehicle movement management systems.”
According to a famous news source, the vehicle when it starts moving freight in North America in the next few months.
A human driver will also be behind the wheel to take over when necessary. An Aurora spokeswoman said they will announce pilot programs for customers planning to use Volvo’s trucks later this year. The companies were not named, but they have previously run pilot programs with FedEx and Uber Freight.
Aurora plans to soon deploy 20 fully driverless trucks between Dallas and Houston. However, it is unclear whether this first fleet of driverless vehicles will be Volvo trucks or trucks from other manufacturing partners. Volvo has begun producing a test fleet of VNL Autonomous Trucks at its New River Valley assembly plant in Virginia, the companies said at the event in Las Vegas. Nils Jaeger, President of Volvo Autonomous Solutions, called this truck the company’s “first example of a standardized global autonomous technology platform” and added that they plan to introduce additional models in the future.
