WhatsApp, one of the world’s most popular messaging applications, connects billions of users around the world. Meta is preparing to implement a feature that will make it easier for speakers of different languages to communicate with each other. An in-app translation feature is being developed for the Android version of WhatsApp.
According to the news of WABetaInfo site; WhatsApp plans to integrate Google’s Live Translation feature into chats. If this addition takes place, users will be able to translate foreign texts without switching between different applications.
Live Translation performs its operations on the device and does not send personal data to Google’s cloud. Therefore, the translation feature can work offline once the user downloads the required language pack. However, WABetaInfo notes that this tool may be limited to certain languages such as Hindi and English at first.
Since Live Translate is currently available on select Pixel devices, WhatsApp’s translation feature may not be available on all Android phones. It is also possible that Google will expand the feature’s availability to more platforms or make an exclusive deal with Meta. As a result, the feature is still in development and it is too early to tell its features or whether it will be released to the public.
Can WhatsApp bring a similar feature to the iPhone application?
With Apple recently launching an API for the Translate app, WhatsApp could easily bring a similar feature to its iOS client as well. However, no relevant reference has yet been seen in the iPhone app. Therefore, it remains unclear at the moment whether this special addition is on the company’s roadmap.
