by Kirkor Divarcı The missile projects it developed could perhaps be a great threshold for Turkey to make progress today.
Alright our country’s space adventureWhy did it end before it started? What could we have done differently that we couldn’t?
The desire to be in the skies was initiated in 1957, when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik into space.
Many young people around the world turned to rocketry under the influence of this inspiring success. Turkey did not remain indifferent to this global excitement and amateur missile clubs were established in many Anatolian cities. One of them is a group established with high school students. Bandırma Missile ClubIt attracted attention by launching its first rocket in 1959.
But this is the first attempt, just 40 meters high It ended in failure by going out and crashing into the sea. However, this failure did not break the determination of the young people; They continued to try.
As a continuation of this excitement, Kirkor Divarcı appears before us.
25-year-old Master KirkorHe developed his passion for rocketry without any engineering education, based on the drawings he saw in newspapers and the help of a body shop friend. The successes achieved with the first nine small rocket tests were crowned with the great success of the tenth rocket.
1962’de Bandırma Missile Club and Kirkor Divarcı They joined forces and developed a common project. He achieved great success with the Marmara 4 rocket in this project, which reached an altitude of 5415 meters. This success placed Bandırma Missile Club and Kirkor Usta in third place after amateur rocketry experiments in the USA and Germany.
However, pursuing dreams and success was not that rosy.
Amateur rocketry in Turkeyfaced various challenges due to the rapidly changing political and social environment in the late 1960s and early 1970s. With its successes, the club began to receive support from ITU and military circles.
in the USA and Germany from amateur missile tests Then Türkiye ranked third. The way was opened for young people, and a completely different wind began to blow in our country. Until those events happened…
An unexpected event happened to Master Kirkor.
Missile work soon stopped. Because one evening for an unknown reason A fire broke out in Kirkor Divarcı’s house.
This fire It caused all his projects to burn. The great loss he experienced destroyed all of Kirkor Divarcı’s enthusiasm for the rocket.
Even though Divarcı quit rocketry, the club continued its activities for a while.
But as you will appreciate, the unpleasantness will never leave us behind. One in the exhibition club because of model airplanefaced accusations of American propaganda, and rocket work was halted for security reasons.
This is how the club’s activities came to an end during this period, with decreasing interest and increasing obstacles. Bandırma Missile Club and Master Kirkor’s story, on the one hand, remains in memory as a hopeful story of inspiration, on the other hand, it also shows how interest in science and technology in Turkey has been interrupted and perhaps why we cannot move forward.
Maybe one day Bandırma Missile Club And Master Kirkor’s dreams may come to life again with today’s technology, who knows!
